Ulysses the First is the Sixth Saint to Serve the King Undying and the co-founder of the Fourth House.
Biography
History
Some years before The Resurrection, a scientist named John Gaius was working on a plan to save humanity from a climate apocalypse with the invention of cryotubes that could be used to safely transport the entire population offworld. For this project, he had the use of a few hundred dead human bodies. His plan fell out of favor, however: his funding was pulled, and the electricity shut off in his lab. Much to his surprise, none of the bodies that he had personally handled decomposed.
Gaius was eventually able to animate two of the bodies. Their birth names — “U—“ and “T—“ — are lost to history, and were dubbed Ulysses and Titania. It was through these two test subjects that Gaius was able to refine and master his ability to manipulate dead matter.
At some point following The Resurrection, Ulysses and Titania were presumably imbued with souls (whether their original or some other are unknown), and went on to respectively become a necromancer and cavalier. Given that Ulysses ultimately ascended to Lyctorhood, it follows that Titania likely died at his hand. Together, Ulysses and Titania founded the Fourth House, known as the Hope of the Emperor and the Emperor's sword.
In his lifetime, Ulysses had a reputation for "inciting" "sexy parties"[1] and making people laugh.
In the fight with the Sixth Resurrection Beast, after Cyrus has drawn the Beast into a black hole, Ulysses took it's dormant brain down to the stoma and disposed of it singlehandedly.[1]
Ulysses died fighting Number Eight. In the battle with Number Eight, the Lyctors attempted to shorten the fight with the Beast by bringing it down to the bathyrhoic layer of the River as fast as possible. However, once down there, the Beast was still too strong to be swept by the current. To defeat the Beast. Ulysses wrestled it through the stoma, damning himself in the process.[1]
Appearance and Personality
There is no known description of Ulysses's appearance.
Ulysses is fond remembered by Augustine as a gregarious—and at times mad[2]—man. Despite his party-animal reputation, his self-sacrifice makes it clear that he took his duty to serve seriously.
